UPDATE August 12, 2010
RITHA MASON has arranged an exhibition at the Saanich Municipal Hall of "Visual Storytelling". Two of our members have photographs on display - Ken Beattie has 3 photos from the Greater Vancouver Zoo and Joan McIlmoyl Cleghorn has 1 from the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. A special feature of this display are a few of Dorita Grant's wonderful clay dolls; a photo of one of them appears on our home page. The exhibit is on until the end of the month and is well worth stopping by during office hours to take a look.
BB&C GARAGE SALE -CANCELLED
August 7, 2010
Our condolences are extended to Ron Kehn on the death of his father Bernard, on August 1, 2010. Although expected it will be a great loss to Ron and his brother and sisters. A service was held on August 6th.
A long time member, Vesta Stevenson died on July 25th. Vesta had been a member for many years. She was the first member who greeted me when I went to join BB&C many years ago when the clubhouse was on Store Street. She attended the Club nearly every day that it was open until her health no longer permitted this activity. There was no service and her obituary was placed in the Air Canada Retirerees Newsletter which had been her "baby" for many years.
JUNE 2010
We have come to the end of an exciting week of Royal Canadian Navy activities. The sun at last appeared and while visiting Fort Rodd Hill on Friday, the sea sparkled under the blue sky and gradually the tops of the mountains appeared across the strait. One by one the navy vessels from different countries left the harbour to take up their positions in readiness for the fleet review on Saturday. It was the beginning of a perfect weekend for our navy guests.
In celebration of this anniversary year for the Canadian Navy, I would like to recognize the BB&C members who have ties to the Navy. If there are others not mentioned here, please let me know. Firstly, of course, is Randy Esdon, who is currently serving out of the base here in Esquimalt. When he is not at sea he is a major player in keeping our Club running. Bob Garneau, another of our very helpful members, served in the Navy in the 1950’s, I believe. Les Hudgins was in the Army but I believe he served on a ship for awhile. Our indispensable John Carruthers served from 1954 to 1991 and was a Lieutenant-Commander.
Ritha Mason joined as an Ordinary Wren at the Carleton Reserve while teaching in Ottawa. She later joined the regular service and was one of a quota of 25 Wren Officers in the RCN. Quite prestigious!
And then we have John Mason, one of our early members; Member # 104!!. John joined the RCN during the war and rose to the rank of Captain (N). This is a 4 stripe Captain and the equivalent of a full Colonel in the Army. And now for the exciting news. John is the model for a new sculpture by artist Nathan Scott, of a sailor wearing the square rig (see illustration) seated on a bench opposite the Homecoming statue. This is to be unveiled on May 4, 2011. Truly an honour! Congratulations, John
Here is some computer related information for you. If you do not already pick up copies of the Boulevard magazine (free) when it comes out every two months you may wish to do so as they have a feature called “Technologia” written by Darryl Gittins. You can look at the March/April copy in the library and the May/June issue is out now. This is a must read as far as I am concerned.
Please let me know of any significant or interesting item for this web news.
